Ear Wax And What To Do About It

August 19, 2009 @ 07:03 AM — by AuDNet Member

Accumulations of ear wax (or cerumen, pronounced “se-roo-men") is a common occurrence in normal ear canals, especially those of adult males. Left un-attended an excessive accumulation of cerumen can interfere with hearing by blocking the ability of sound to reach the eardrum.

A common mistake in dealing with ear wax is to self-treat using Q-tips. If the accumulation is significant, Q-tips can actually push the accumulation deeper into the ear canal, perhaps causing an even bigger problem.

If you or a loved one thinks they may have an ear wax problem, contact your local audiologist. Audiologists can examine your ear, determine if excessive wax is present, and can remove the wax either with instruments or solutions. Once excessive wax has been removed, your audiologist can provide you with tips and techniques for keeping your ear-wax accumulation to a minimum.
