How Can My Jaw Make My Ears Hurt?
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ Disorder) is a condition of the joint connecting the upper and lower jaw bones. It can create chronic pain that manifests itself in a variety of ways. In addition to eye pain, headaches, and facial pain, TMJ can also be associated with certain ear symptoms as well. These can include:
- Ringing or hissing sounds in the ear
- A feeling of diminished hearing or plugged ears
- Itchy ears
- Ear pain when there is no ear infection
- Dizziness or balance problems
If you suspect TMJ, see your physician. IF you suspect a hearing problem, see your audiologist, who is familiar with TMJ, and can refer you to a physician if needed for treatment.
