Can Noise Cancelling Headsets Help Your Hearing?

A lot of people today are wearing various styles and brands of noise-cancelling headsets while on airplanes. On the one hand, listening to loud music through headphones for prolonged periods of time is not advisable, as such consistent exposure to loud sounds can lead to permanent hearing loss.

On the other hand, noise cancelling headsets reduce the level of background noise that reaches your ear. This reduction in competing noise level makes it more possible for the wearer to turn the volume of the music down and still have an enjoyable experience. So, the answer is a qualified “Yes”. Noise cancelling headsets can afford an opportunity to lower your exposure to loud sounds while listening to headsets, but only if the operator is choosing to lower the level of music that the noise-cancelling headsets afford. If the listener still wants it “loud”, any advantage to hearing health offered by noise cancelling headsets will be defeated.
