Your Plastic Brain
Consider this. Studies have shown that the part of the brain responsible for processing music is larger in professional musicians than in musically untrained people. Similarly the part of the brain involved in language is larger in bilingual people than in those who speak only one language.
Modern day neuroscience has established that our brain is a far more plastic organ than was previously thought. Today we know that new neural connections continue to develop throughout our lives, even well into advanced age. And, just like any other part of the body, the brain responds to mental stimulation. Brains like workouts. Hearing loss deprives the brain from important auditory stimulation, lessening the workout opportunity for hearing and understanding. When hearing is corrected with devices such as hearing aids, the workout opportunity is re-established, increasing auditory brain fitness and overall hearing quality.
Deciding whether or not hearing aids are right for you after only a day or two of using them doesn't give your brain enough time to learn how to process the new sound information it is now getting. But, with time, the brain learns again how to process these sounds, and once it does, long term hearing quality is significantly advanced. Just like a workout in a gym, brain workouts show their best results after time and repeated effort. Hang in there! Your brain will love you for it!
