Peter Townsend Speaks Out About Hearing Loss
In the March issue of Rolling Stone magazine, the Who's lead guitarist, Peter Townsend is interviewed. The rock legend talks about how his hearing loss and roaring tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is now so bad, that he feels he may never tour again. Years of exposure to loud music has taken its toll on the hearing of may famous musicians. Today, when you watch musicians and singers on television, you will notice that most are now wearing devices right in their ears to monitor the music. These "musician montors" help to reduce the level of sound reaching their ears, while still allowing them to hear the music and their own voice.
Rockers taking steps to reduce the permanent damange loud music can cause to hearing is a lesson for all people, young and old. Don't wait for loud sounds to do their damage. Take steps right now to lower you risk by using ear protection (plugs, muffs, etc.) whenever you are exposed to loud and potentially damanging noise. And remember, its not just music that can be problematic. Power tools, yard equipment, some kitchen appliances and recreational activities such as snow mobiling, hunting, car racing, etc., are all cause for concern and should alert you to wear some hearing protection.
