How Audiologists Can Help Prevent Hearing Loss
Audiologists are THE hearing experts and thus the first professional you should seek when it comes to your hearing health. Preventing hearing loss is easier than you think. You can start by visiting a local audiologist. CLICK HERE to locate one that is a part of our Preferred Provider Community. Once you set up an appointment, you can take a hearing test to determine whether or not you are at risk of hearing loss. We recommend that you regularly get your hearing checked the way you would your vision.
Your audiologist should be able to provide you with some simple measures you can take to prevent hearing loss. The following are some of these measures:
1. Avoid unnecessary loud noises. Standing next to a jackhammer when you don't need to is one example of this. If there is extremely loud construction going on nearby, then move. The less you expose your ears to unwanted and unnecessary loud noise, the better.
2. If you like using headphones because you can hear music more clearly, then use sound isolating headphones (aka noise canceling headphones). These headphones will reduce the noise around you so that you don't have to turn the volume on your headphones up and damage your ears.
3. Pay attention to your elders. If you see that your parents and grandparents are experiencing hearing loss, then it could be a sign that it's a part of your genetic makeup and you should be even more cautious about preventing hearing loss.
The list goes on but you get the idea. The key is to expose yourself to as little loud noise as possible. Going to a few rock concerts here and there won't make you go deaf but even then, try not to stand next to a speaker. And no matter what, always consult an audiologist for anything related to hearing loss prevention and hearing health.
