Addressing Hearing Healthcare on Medical Mission Trips

November 30, 2011 @ 06:31 PM — by David Smirga, M.A.

A recent article in the Journal Standard, highlighted the work of two audiologists and hearing aid store proprietors, who make frequent Mission trips to impoverished countries like Guatemala, Peru, and Mexico in order to fit children and adults with needed hearing devices.

As is often the case, the recipients of these hearing aids were previously unable to afford hearing aids as they can run upwards of $700 in these areas. The poor hearing healthcare system is mainly responsible for children growing through adulthood without any access to hearing solutions.

Additionally, many of the adults who had hearing loss were previously unable to find employment due to their disability. In response, many shed tears when hearing for the first time. The audiologists also reflected on the emotional experience of helping people to hear, especially in a country were hearing aids are such luxuries. Not only do the audiologists fit devices to those with hearing loss but they also test the hearing of these individuals with 95% accuracy.

The couple is planning many more Mission trips and are seeking donations for their 2012 engagement. While their trips focus on helping children, the couple accepts all sizes of hearing devices and can use any model they receive.
