Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent health complaints in adults over the age of 60 and a major factor in speech comprehension difficulties. The goal for researchers at the Departments of Neurology and Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and the Volen National Center for Complex Systems at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts was to examine the effects of hearing ability on the brain processes supporting spoken language processing in adult humans.
The study, published in The Journal of Neuroscience, utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to monitor activity in the brain while older adult subjects with normal-level hearing for their age listened to sentences that varied in the amount of linguistic comprehension needed to understand them...

Americans seem to be getting older, and as a result the hearing care market is changing. As the generation Baby Boomers continue to climb in years, millions more are finally reaching the “retiree” stage of 65 years or more. The most recent US Census provided very simple data to support this curious finding – there are currently about 40 million Americans who are older than age 65, but that number is projected to increase to 55 million by 2020 and even 72 million by 2030. Unless the world population is just capsizing, we are having an influx of older folks that need hearing care.
To most people who are looking to buy hearing aids, they perceive a difference in the quality of the technology, but tend to only think in terms of the cost of the device. They may not consider the quality of their hearing when comparing prices. On the other hand, audiologists know that different technology will result in a different quality hearing outcome for their patients, and this is mostly due to the manufacturer's use of channels and bands within a hearing device. The number of channels and bands inside a hearing device may effect hearing, but do these technology differences improve hearing? The value of higher technology in the form of more channels and bands is certainly questionable.
As you have heard, legislation has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, which, when passed, will allow Medicare eligible beneficiaries direct access to audiologists for hearing and balance evaluation and diagnosis.

Recently a "Dear Abby" fan wrote in to ask for advice on what to do because her husband constantly needs to have blaring music in the car when she's around and how its painful to her ears. Abby suggested that it could be that her husband suffers from hearing loss (probably from listening to too-loud music), which is why he needs the volume turned up so high. She recommended that he should be checked by an audiologist - a "hearing specialist" (a term coined by AuDNet) so that he doesn't damage his hearing further, and hers won't be affected.
By using the term "hearing specialist," this advice reiterates the importance of seeing an audiologist rather than a hearing aid specialist, ENT, dealer, etc.

The average person cleans the outer part of their ears with cotton swabs as if its apart of their daily hygiene routine. Normally earwax is not a problem. It serves to protect the skin of the ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and also provides some protection against dirt and other foreign particles. It may not cause any medical issues and doesn't always have to be removed, unless there is pain and discomfort.
The market is wide open for audiologists...namely because 38 million people suffer from hearing loss, people with hearing loss wait an average of 7 years before seeking help, 20% of people who need hearing aids actually have them, and the list goes on.
This is an under served population therefore, audiologists need a way to reach these consumers. AudNet and AudiologyOnline have teamed up to bring audiologists its iMarketing Program.
