Are They Right for Me?
Losing the ability to hear voices and noises clearly can be confusing frustrating. Fortunately, those who suffer hearing loss have access to a variety of assistive listening devices and hearing aids designed to amplify sounds and enhance their quality of life. However, hearing aids are not appropriate for every person with impaired hearing. Candidacy is based on several factors, including the type and severity of hearing impairment. Candidates for Hearing Aids
Suitable candidates for hearing aids include those individuals who suffer from mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss as a result of presbycusis (age-related hearing loss), exposure to loud noises, drug reactions, head injury or trauma, or a genetic disorder. If the hearing loss cannot be treated medically or surgically, hearing aids provide sound amplification and improve the hearing experience.
You may be an appropriate candidate for a hearing aid if you relate to any of the following statements:
- I strain to hear conversations.
- I turn the television and/or radio to maximum volume.
- I struggle to read the faces of people I converse with.
- I am tired or frustrated after straining to carry on a conversation with a loved one.
- I accuse friends or loved ones of mumbling.
- I ask them to repeat themselves because I can’t hear or understand them.
- People accuse me of shouting when I speak to them.
- When someone is speaking to me, it sounds like the words run together.
- I can hear better out of one ear than the other.
Hearing aids candidates range in age from infants to senior citizens, and include people with other disabilities. However, if your hearing is profoundly impaired, hearing aids may not provide the type of assistance that you need to communicate with those around you. Measuring Your Expectations of Hearing Aids
It should be noted that, unlike eyeglasses, which can restore 20/20 vision, hearing aids will not restore optimal hearing ability. Also, there is an adjustment period associated with any type of hearing aid; it can take some time to adapt to using it correctly. During this period, you’ll meet with your NOWiHEAR Audiologist to learn how to take full advantage of your hearing aid.
