The industry has evolved. Hearing aids were invented in the 1930s and began to be sold through sales representatives of those hearing aid companies. The profession of audiology actually came out in World War II when the Science of Audiology was created or invented to meet the needs of all those veterans that were coming back with serious hearing loss due to their experiences in the war. Well, over the years, audiology has now come to be a doctoring profession that is available to everyone. Unfortunately, the licensing laws in most states still do not require an audiology degree in order to be licensed to sell hearing aids and so it is that confusion that I think makes it important for us to take that extra step to make sure consumers not only understand what audiology is and what it can provide them in terms of healthcare but also make easier for them to find an audiologist in their community.
