Normal hearing is critical for speech and language development. Even a mild hearing loss can significantly impact a child's development. Babies with normal hearing will follow predictable patterns of behavior. An infant will startle or jump if there is a loud sound but they will quiet and be attentive if a parent is talking to them. At about six months, they will start turning their eyes and their head to find where the sound is coming from and by a year of age they should be saying simple words like momma or dada and language should continue to increase with more words in their vocabulary throughout their toddler years. If at any time during this development, you have a parental concern that there is a problem, you need to have your child's hearing tested. Hearing is an invisible handicap. Children, babies especially, cannot tell us if they cannot hear, so it is critically important to have a hearing evaluation.
